Follow these 3 Easy Steps for Your Hot Water System Maintenance

Most people only realise that their hot water tanks are in bad shape when they walk into the shower in the morning and are met with cold water. If you do not want to have such inconveniences, or you do not want to keep getting a jet of cold water when you get inside the shower in the morning, you have to consider the value of hot water system maintenance. Here, are a few regular maintenance tips which can help you keep the hot water system working for the longest possible period.

1. Regularly check the temperature and pressure of the valve

Experts recommend that you check the temperature and pressure relief valve to make sure that they are working once every three months. To test the valve, place a bucket under the drainpipe, and then raise or lower the valve. If the valve is working as it should, hot water will run out of the end of the drainpipe. On the other hand, if nothing happens to the drainpipe, you may have to replace it. A comprehensive check will include finding out if there are mineral build-ups which often cause the TVR valve to freeze and become non-operational.

2. Removing sediments from the tank

Sediments are another common problem with hot water tank, often leading to an inefficient and even smelly supply of water. Your tank should be drained at least once every six months. You can use clean water to flush any remaining particles when the draining procedure has been completed. If you come from one of the parts of the country where hard water is common, it is crucial to keep checking the tank for the build-up of limescale, which can block systems and significantly reduce the efficiency of the tank.

3. Assess the presence of leaks

Leaks are hazardous in a hot water tank because if the tank burst, massive water damage and even injuries from hot water could result. It is therefore prudent to ensure that you check the status of your hot water tanks every three months and ensure there are no rust stains, leaks or water pooling at the base of the tank.

Other important maintenance tips include maintaining the right water temperature to prevent the build-up of limescale and knowing the age of the heater. If you have had the tank for decades, it is normal to expect it to have deteriorated in quality and to want to have it replaced.
